Astrobiology

Astrobiology is the scientific field that explores the possibility of life beyond Earth, focusing on the origins, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe. This interdisciplinary area combines aspects of biology, chemistry, geology, and astronomy to study the conditions that might support life elsewhere, such as on other planets or moons. Astrobiologists investigate extreme environments on Earth, which can serve as analogs for potential extraterrestrial habitats, and study the potential for life in diverse environments, including those with extreme temperatures, pressures, or chemical compositions. The field also encompasses the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), the analysis of celestial bodies for signs of life, and the study of potential biosignatures in atmospheric samples. Astrobiology is concerned not only with understanding how life might arise and thrive in various environments but also with the implications of such discoveries for our understanding of life’s place in the cosmos.
