Moon Origin

“Moon Origin” refers to the various scientific hypotheses and theories that explain how Earth’s Moon was formed. The most widely accepted theory is the Giant Impact Hypothesis, which suggests that the Moon was created from the debris resulting from a colossal collision between Earth and a Mars-sized body, often referred to as Theia, around 4.5 billion years ago. Other theories include the Fission Theory, which proposes that the Moon split off from a rapidly spinning young Earth, and the Capture Theory, which suggests that the Moon was formed elsewhere in the solar system and was captured by Earth’s gravity. Understanding the Moon’s origin has implications for comprehending Earth’s own formation, the dynamics of planetary systems, and the history of the solar system.
